Activity Objective

To help the young people experience the disparity in the distribution of wealth in the world and consider how to alleviate injustice

Lesson Outcome

The young people will be able to explain how the Spirit guides the Church in carrying out Jesus' mission.

Materials

  • Chocolate candies or snack food

  • Plastic baggies

Directions

  • Distribute the bags of candy or snacks to the young people.
  • Give the young people time to react.
  • Explain that the reality of the world is that the majority of the people have only a fraction of the world's wealth and resources.
  • Invite the young people ?to share their feelings about this.
  • Ask the young people to consider what they want to do with the candy distribution situation.
  • Pursue with the young people if they want to leave things the way they are or is there is a way to make things equal.
  • Relate this experience to the concept that we are members of the Church, which is concerned with continuing Jesus' mission of justice.

Hints

Parcel the candy into three groups. The first group should consist of a few bags with many pieces of candy in each of them. The second group should consist of more bags but with less candy in each of them. The third group should consist of a large number of bags with barely any candy in them.

Be obviously random in passing out the bags.

Be prepared for and encourage complaints?it will make the experience richer.

Sensitivities

Some of the young people may have allergies to certain foods. Be sure to choose a snack that all the young people can eat.
