Let's Make a Match

Parts of the Mass Activity

Activity Objective

To expand the children's familiarity with the parts of the Mass

Lesson Outcome

The children will be able to identify parts of the Mass referred to by their Latin, Greek, and Hebrew names.

Materials

  • Large index cards
  • Pens or pencils

Directions

  • Distribute materials to the children.
  • Read the following to the children:

You may hear some parts of the Mass referred to by their Latin names: the Gloria is the hymn of praise in the introductory rite; the Sanctus is the Holy, Holy, Holy after the preface; and the Agnus Dei is the Lamb of God. Kyrie eleison are Greek wrods for "Lord have mercy." Hosanna is a hebrew acclamation for "save, we ask."

  • Assign each child either a word or a definition to write on the index card. (Depending on the size of the group, it might be necessary to have two of each word or definition.)
  • Collect the index cards.
  • Mix the cards and distribute them face down so that the children cannot see the words or definitions.
  • As soon as the children have their cards, instruct them to look at their cards and then hold them so everyone can see them.
  • Tell the children this is a race to find the children whose words and definitions go together.
  • Explain that as soon as you say go, each child is to find his or her match and to sit down next to him or her.
