Activity Objective

To have the children understand that they can reach out to others who are lonely

Lesson Outcome

The children will write friendly notes of encouragement to parishioners who are homebound.

Materials

  • List of homebound parishioners
  • Stationery and envelopes
  • Stamps

Directions

  • Talk to the group about people who are homebound because of illness, age, or lack of family.
  • Ask how we can let these people know that they are not forgotten.
  • Steer the conversation toward writing friendly letters to say that we are thinking of the persons who are homebound.
  • Pass out the stationery and encourage the children to write a note that could include the following:

Hello
I am thinking of you.
The parish of _________ is happy you are part of our family.
You are in our prayers.

Hints

Have your catechetical leader direct you to the parish ministry that takes care of homebound parishioners.

Pre-address the envelopes and instruct the children to keep their letters with the envelopes. Include the grade level and room number in the return address. Mail the notes.

Sensitivities

Direct the children to avoid get-well letters. If you do not want to include the individual names of children, have everyone sign the letters the Second Grade of _________ Parish.
