A Mural of Model Saints

Activity Objective

To show the children how God helps us to stay connected with all of his people, living and dead

Lesson Outcome

The children will demonstrate how God helps us to celebrate the lives of saints and those who live by their example.

Materials

  • Poster paper, separated into four parts
  • Crayons or markers

Directions

  • Discuss with the children that just as saints are examples of how to live, there are members of our family, school, and larger community who exemplify saintly qualities too.
  • Have the children brainstorm saintly qualities. List them on the board.
  • As a group, ask the children to think of people whom they feel possess qualities similar to saints. Have the children explain how the person models such behavior.
  • Next, invite the children to select four people on the list whom they all agree share the qualities of a saint.
  • Gather the children into four smaller groups and assign each group one of those four names.
  • Each group will complete one-fourth of the mural by creating a picture and a prayer of thanks or a brief description of the person's admirable qualities.
  • Encourage groups to think about how the person exemplifies the way we ought to live and which saint they think the person is most like.
  • When the groups are finished with their portion of the mural, collect the four parts and piece them together. Invite the groups to share their portion of the mural with the other children.
  • Hang the mural in the room so that the children are reminded how God helps us to stay connected with all of his people, living and dead, through the Communion of the Saints.
