Prayer Partners

Activity Objective

To teach the children to pray the Lord's Prayer meaningfully, keeping in mind what they are asking God for as they pray

Lesson Outcome

The children will describe the Lord's Prayer as the way Jesus wants us to pray to God.

Materials

  • Copy of the Lord's Prayer:

Our Father,
who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name;
thy kingdom come;
thy will be done
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread;
and forgive us our trespasses
as we forgive those who trespass against us;
and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
Amen.

Directions

  • Tell the children that this activity will help them to think about the meaning of the words of the Lord's Prayer as they pray and discuss it with a partner.
  • Invite children to work with a partner.
  • Suggest that they pray each segment (marked off by punctuation) together softly, stopping to talk together about what the words mean.
  • When the children have finished, ask them to practice praying the prayer from memory by taking turns listening to and coaching each other.
  • Conclude by reminding the children to pray this prayer often because it is the way Jesus wants us to pray to God.
