Read All About It!

Activity Objective

To recall the events of Holy Week to remember that Jesus suffered and died for our salvation

Lesson Outcome

The children will be able to identify the events of Holy Week.

Materials

  • Bibles
  • Construction paper
  • Markers, crayons, pens, pencils

Directions

  • Invite the children to discuss the story, Jesus Prays in the Garden.
  • After a brief discussion, say: During Holy Week we must remember Jesus' advice to the apostles. He wanted them to stay focused on the important events that were going to take place.
  • Tell the children that they can focus on the important events of Jesus' crucifixion and death by reading the Gospel of Mark.
  • Invite the children to work in pairs or small groups for the following activity.
  • Pass out construction paper and coloring and writing materials. Assign each pair a passage from Mark's Gospel, and ask them to create a newspaper article or a newscast describing the event.
  • Assign each group one of the following passages from Mark's Gospel: 14:43-52 (Jesus' arrest), 14:66-72 (Peter's denial), 15:1-5 (Jesus before Pilate), 15:16-20 (Jesus' being mocked by soldiers), 15:21-32 (the crucifixion), 15:33-41 (Jesus' death), and 15:42-47(Jesus' burial).
  • Encourage the pairs to create catchy headlines.
  • For any children who choose to do a newscast, allow enough time for them to plan their interpretations before asking them to share with the rest of the group.
  • Close the activity by saying: In this story we learn that God wants us to stay close to him in prayer. The story also reminds us that through prayer we can find the strength to do his will.
