Kathryn Bojczyk, Ph.D.

The Spiritual Needs of Early Childhood

Research shows that the most significant part of a child's faith formation happens at home which means that it’s never too early for parents to start forming their children – even infants and toddlers – in faith. In this presentation, Dr. Kathryn Bojzcyk will take participants inside the minds and hearts of infants and toddlers and will identify strategies for effective faith formation for these “littlest ones” in order to nurture a faith that will last a lifetime.

When Did “Out of Sequence” Become the Norm in Religious Education (and What Do We Do About It)?

For decades, children marched through Catholic schools and parish religious education programs in lock step, with only a few here and there “falling through the cracks” and showing up for the sacraments “out-of-sequence.” Today, that has all changed. Families that decide to bring their children for faith formation and sacraments come to us whenever the time is right for them. In this presentation, Jayne Ragasa-Mondoy will explore how we need to respond to this “new normal” and what we need to do to engage children and families in faith formation without trying to squeeze them into a “sequence.”

Naming the Real: Sustaining Hope in Life’s Storms
In the face of a sudden or ongoing storm in our life, how do we hold onto hope? Leaning on the tools of Ignatian Spirituality, we’ll walk through a framework to name our storms, to see them with Christ, and to lean on Christ’s companionship as we endure them. Hailing from Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Becky Eldredge, author, spiritual director, and founder of Ignatian Ministries, knows the physical, mental, spiritual, and emotional stress of multiple hurricanes and other deep complexities of life & suffering. Together, we’ll leave this workshop with a deeper understanding of what is ours to do, what is God’s to do, and how to step forward in hope.

Offering Healing and Hope: How to Pray and Lead Imaginative Prayer

St. Ignatius of Loyola invited us to use our imaginations in prayer to better know, love, and follow Christ. When we use our imaginations in prayer, we contemplate using not just the words we read in Scripture, but the visual images, feelings, sights, and sounds that come to mind. This type of prayer offers profound healing and hope as we are gifted with deep interior knowledge of Jesus. In this workshop, Becky Eldredge, author, retreat facilitator, spiritual director, and founder of Ignatian Ministries, will guide you on both how to pray and how to lead imaginative prayer.

Braving the Thin Places: Wisdom for Creating a Space for Grace

The concept of a thin space is an ancient one, arising from the Celtic tradition but it captures well the time that we currently find ourselves in. The Celtic imagination considers sacred places to be “thin,” or places where the veil between the worlds, meaning heaven and earth, seem to be discernibly close to each other. In this presentation, Julianne Stanz will explore how, in these thin spaces we encounter ourselves, our relationship with others and ultimately with God and how they can open up new ways of seeing, fresh avenues of thinking and ultimately, transformed ways of being.

Doing Business (and Life) Differently: “The Homeboy Way”

Homeboy Industries, founded by Fr. Greg Boyle, SJ, is the largest gang rehabilitation and re-entry program in the world and has stood for over 30 years as a beacon of hope in Los Angeles by providing training and support to formerly gang-involved and previously incarcerated men and women, allowing them to redirect their lives and become contributing members of our community. In this presentation, Homeboy Industries CEO, Thomas Vozzo, shares the business lessons – and more importantly, the life lessons – he has learned from leaving behind 26 years in the very for-profit capital sector of our economy to working with the poor, forgotten and demonized people of society and how doing things “the Homeboy way” can change your perspective on what you can be, how you can give, and ultimately, who you are.

Catechists as Mystagogues

The new Directory for Catechesis states that the catechist is called to be “a teacher and a mystagogue who introduces others to the mystery of God revealed in the Paschal Mystery of Christ. This means that, while we most certainly transmit content and information, we do so with the context or climate of prayerful encounter with Divine Mystery. In this presentation, Joe Paprocki, DMin, will unpack the meaning of mystagogy and how catechists can and must serve as, not only teachers, but also mystagogues.
