Here I Am, Lord

A Reflection by Mike Lorenzo

A few years ago, I found myself on retreat listening to a homily on Matthew 1, a Gospel that outlines the genealogy of Jesus. The priest spoke about how the men and women listed in these verses had no idea that generations later their line would produce the Messiah. Much like Ananias in Acts 9:10-11, the people in that Gospel were ordinary people trying to follow God day after day. Eventually all of that work came to fruition with the birth of Christ.

I often revisit that homily because like many people, I can get caught up in worrying about situations way down the road and far outside of my control. Just like Ananias, we’re called to trust where God is taking us even if we’re scared and don’t know where we’re going.

When I look back on where God has taken me, I see how He used so many friends and mentors to do His work in my heart. Those people did not know how their actions would impact me. Similarly, I’m unaware of all the ways God is using me today to change the world. All I can do is answer when He calls and listen to His instructions. Take some time today and ask God to use you for His work. Who knows what God will accomplish with your help!
