Order of the Mass

Activity Objective:
To help the children connect the Liturgy of the Word and the Liturgy of the Eucharist as parts of Mass
Lesson Outcome:
The children will be able to identify what is happening in the Liturgy of the Word and Liturgy of the Eucharist.
Materials
  • 4" x 6" index cards
  • Tape
  • Chalkboard
Directions:
  • Before the session, prepare the index cards by writing one of the following parts of Mass on each card:

The people pray the Creed.
Bible reading from the Lectionary
Homily by priest
Prayers for people in need
The gifts of bread and wine are brought to the altar.
Consecration of bread and wine
The Lord's Prayer
The sign of peace
Reception of Holy Communion

  • Create two columns on the board, one labeled Liturgy of the Word and the other Liturgy of the Eucharist.
  • Divide the children into pairs.
  • Pass out one of the printed index cards and a piece of tape to each pair.
  • Have each pair take their card to the board and tape it in the column where it belongs.
  • After all the cards have been placed on the board, review the columns with the children.

Hints:
This activity can also be done individually. One child would be given all the cards and asked to place them in two piles, one for the Liturgy of the Word and one for the Liturgy of the Eucharist.
