As you begin your retreat, pause for a few moments and grow still inside. Focus on your breathing, and let go of any distracting thoughts. Let your mind become present to God. Take three slow, deep breaths. Feel God's loving gaze upon you.
Kateri belonged to the Turtle Clan of the Mohawks, an Iroquois nation. She was an outstanding Christian. She went to Mass daily, made frequent visits to the Blessed Sacrament, and prayed the rosary often. She cared for the sick and the old, and she taught children. Tekakwitha was known for her gentleness, kindness, and joyful spirit.
Tekakwitha was twelve when she first met Catholics. Several priests came to her village and spoke to the people about God. She listened carefully to what they said about the great Spirit who had come to earth and who had become a man named Jesus. She heard them talk about the great peace that comes into our hearts when we believe in Jesus and follow his way of love. Right away, Tekakwitha knew that what they were saying was true, and she wanted to be baptized.
How do I put God first in my life?
When might I call on Jesus to help bring peace into my heart?
Saint Kateri, help me to believe in Jesus and follow his way of love.
